They were gods, all of them, in the baseball universe when I was a kid. They were distant ghosts like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, and they were then-contemporary stars like Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron and Harmon Killebrew. It was all the same to me.

And that group included the marvelous Willie Mays.
