58 people arrested in drug operation in Wise County, Va. (2024)

WISE COUNTY, VA (WJHL) – Southwest Virginia law enforcement officers arrested more than 50 people during their drug-related mass-arrest called “Operation Sweetheart Sweep.”

According to a news release from the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Wise County and the City of Norton, officers arrested 50 people following an investigation by the Southwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force into illegal drug activity in Wise County and in Norton, Va.

Those arrested had been recently indicted by a grand jury for drug-related offenses, including the distribution of synthetic narcotics, heroine, methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as crimes related to the distribution of prescription narcotics such as morphine, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

“This operation is part of our renewed effort to fight the scourge of drug dealing andsubstance abuse as we continue the great work of former Commonwealth’s Attorneys Ron Elkins andChad Dotson,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp said. “It is a battle to save our communitiesand neighborhoods from the devastating impact of addiction and drug related crime. Several of theseindicted individuals were charged with distributing drugs near a school. Several face chargesinvolving dangerous synthetic drugs that have been linked to serious violent crime. We take thatvery seriously, and my office will prosecute all these individuals to the fullest extent of the law.”
